The birdlife of Melrakkaslétta is varied thanks to the diversity of wetland types, rich shores, a harsh climate which reflects in the vegetation of the area and last but not least its geographical location.

 There is not a huge variety of mammals within the area, but this is true for Iceland in general, so one should not be so surprised there. However, Melrakkaslétta (when directly translated) means the Arctic Fox Plane, which leads one to believe that the area has at some point had some major significance for Iceland’s only native mammal.
